This study aims to identify the reality of commercial services (the commercial function), their spatial distribution along the streets of Zinjibar City, their spatial classification and analysis both quantitatively and qualitatively, and to reveal their distribution patterns. The study also seeks to evaluate the adequacy and efficiency of the functional performance of commercial establishments spread throughout the city streets and their ability to meet the needs of the residents of Zinjibar City and its surrounding region. The study focused on analyzing the natural and human geographical factors affecting the development of the commercial function in Zinjibar City, as well as the spatial distribution patterns of commercial activities and the evolution of their trends within the internal urban structure of the city during the period 1994–2024. The findings showed that commercial establishments have become widely concentrated along the main streets and residential neighborhood streets of the city, expanding and varying in terms of number and commercial patterns. Some of these establishments were constructed informally by residents in many streets within the internal urban structure of Zinjibar City without prior planning by the relevant authorities and without adherence to planning standards. The study further revealed that Zinjibar City contains a large number of commercial establishments distributed across four residential neighborhoods that constitute the internal urban structure of the city, with varying proportions. Among these neighborhoods, one occupied the leading position in terms of relative importance within the overall commercial functional patterns of the city.
